Beach versus Indoor

There are many differences between beach volleyball vs indoor volleyball. The main difference is obviously the court which the game is played on. At Niagara Sport & Social our main indoor court volleyball facility has excellent volleyball sport specific volleyball courts and top of the line equipment including nets, ref stands, antennae, and balls. Indoor volleyball games are played in a gym with high ceilings. The building is heated which makes it perfect for playing in the colder months! Our beach leagues are all played on well maintained courts and provide high quality equipment. Another huge difference is the elements; in beach volleyball the sun, wind, and even rain can impact the game, unlike indoor volleyball where the conditions are controlled and consistent.

Court sizes differ between beach volleyball vs indoor court volleyball, these rules may also vary per league. For example our indoor volleyball leagues and indoor volleyball tournaments are all played on a standard 9m x 9m court. Our beach volleyball leagues and beach volleyball tournament's court size depends on the competition level. Courts are 8m x 8m for Competitive 2's and competitive 4's and 9m x 9m for intermediate 5's and recreational 6's.

For rules this again depends on the league, but in traditional beach volleyball a block touch counts as one of your contacts leaving you with only 2 more contacts to get the ball back over the net. In indoor a block touch does not count as one of your team's contacts and you have 3 touches remaining to get the ball back over the net. Our leagues, games that are 4 or more players are played with indoor rules. For example in this block situation this rule would mean a block touch still leaves your team with 3 contacts. Our competitive 2's league uses the traditional beach rule that a block touch counts as one of your contacts. Scoring- Indoor games are played to 25 points while beach volleyball games are played to 21 points. Both offer a tie breaker set that goes to 15 points.
